Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said on Feb. 25 that over 30 billion liters of oil and gas has been consumed in Iran in the current calendar year (to end March 20), Iran's IRIB News Agency reported.

"The figure is a new record for domestic consumption, he said.

"Consuming that amount of oil and gas in less than a year is a real disaster," he explained.

He went on to note that some 85-86 per cent of Iranian households are connected to the country's gas network.

"Tehran's electricity network currently doesn't meet the demands of the city so electricity can't take the place of gas in the capital," Zanganeh said.

"Iran's gas shortage was around 160 million cubic meters this year," the official said.

"If only Phases 5 and 6 of the South Pars gas field were ready to be inaugurated, Iran's gas output could reach 240 million cubic meters," he said.
