Iran: Washington in no position to preach about human rights

By Rahim Zamanov - Trend:

Iran's foreign ministry said in a statement that the United States is not in a position to preach other countries on rights violations.

"The US is not in a position to preach other countries as it continues to systematically violate human rights in notorious prisons of Guantanamo and Bagram, kills innocent civilians by its drones and ignores the rights of Palestinians under Israeli attacks," the statement reads.

"Washington itself is known as a symbol of rights violations," it added.

Iran has issued the statement in reaction to a US State Department's report on human rights abroad.

The US report said that there has been little progress on human rights since Iran's President Hassan Rouhani took office a few months ago.

Iran's foreign ministry says the State Department's report is based on groundless information provided by groups opposing Iranian government, and trumped up by Washington's foreign policy objectives.
