The Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday summoned head of the Iranian Interests Office in Cairo, informing him of some diplomatic rules to be followed by the Iranian mission, the ministry said, Xinhua reported.

The ministry said Mojtaba Amani has been summoned by the assistant foreign minister for Asian affairs who stressed on "the necessity of consistency between the work of the Iranian mission in Cairo and the recognized diplomatic rules."

It was the second time this year that Egypt has summoned the Iranian top diplomat in Cairo.

Earlier in January the Egyptian Foreign Ministry summoned the man over Iran's official statements against Egypt's security crackdown on supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

Egypt's ties with Iran have been deteriorating over the past three decades after the 1979 Islamist Revolution in Iran and the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty the same year. Cairo and Tehran do not have embassies for each other's states and are content with diplomatic offices.

When Morsi came to office in mid 2012, relations between the two states started to normalize during his one-year rule, but they went back to tension following his ouster.
