Following the last week's violent incident against political prisoners in one of Iran's prisons, the head of the Iran's Prisons Organization was removed from his post.

Iran's Judiciary Chief Sadeq Amoli Larijani has removed Gholamhossein Esmaili from his post and appointed him as head of Tehran Judiciary, the country's Fars news agency reported on April 23.

Esmaili was seriously criticized due to the violent beating on a number of political prisoners in Evin prison in Tehran on April 17.

The incident originally took place after some political prisoners in Evin prison staged a protest because of "harsh investigations" that occurred at the facility.

Following the protests, orces from the intelligence ministry along with the members of Iran's IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps) swarmed one of the Evin prison sections, and beat down on the political prisoners. Reportedly, some prison guards also participated in the beatings.

More than 30 prisoners were injured, and at least four had to be transferred to a hospital outside the prison, according to Iranian reformist news websites.

Esmaili denied that any such incidents took place in Evin prison, saying that "such rumours are merely being spread by "anti-revolutionaries, and are baseless".

Iran's judiciary spokesman Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei has dismissed any link between the prison incident and the removal of the Prisons Organization's head, saying that the decision was been made several weeks ago.

Mohseni Ejei also remarked that Esmaili's new post as head of Tehran Judiciary should be considered a career promotion.
