Iran's Water and Power Resources Management Company and Japan's International Center for Water Hazards and Risk Management signed a memorandum of understanding to expand cooperation in the water management sector.

Mohammad-Reza Rezazadeh, Managing Director of Iran's Water and Power Resources Management Company said the MOU would pave the way for the two sides to cooperate in the field of Integrated Water Resources Management, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on May 26.

Kuniyoshi Takeuchi, the director of Japan's International Center for Water Hazards and Risk Management (ICHARM), said for his part that the issue of climate change is a serious concern, especially for arid areas.

Iran is located in an arid zone and the country has been repeatedly faced with drought in the past 40 years.

The drought of 1992-2002 caused a major blow to agriculture. There were quotas imposed for fresh water in several cities including Tehran.

On May 19, Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian said water shortage has been turned to a serious problem for the country. He added that renewable water reserves have decreased from 130 billion cubic meters to 120 billion cubic meters.
