Iran's police seized 850 kilograms of various drugs in the country's southern Province of Hormozgan on June 15.

The drugs including opium and hashish were seized from armed smugglers near Jask city during an operation yesterday, the chief of Jask police department Jahanshir Javadizadeh said, Iranian IRIB news agency reported on June 16.

The police discovered 450 kilograms of opium and 400 kilograms of hashish from the car of smugglers, Javadizadeh said, adding that the drug traffickers escaped after the police operation.

Iran is situated on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Gulf States.

The Islamic Republic shares about 900 kilometres of common border with Afghanistan, over which 74 percent of opium is smuggled.

It was reported that some 500 tons of drugs were seized in the country during the 12-month period from March 2013 to March 2014.

The fight against drugs annually costs Iran about $1 billion, according to the official estimates. The statistics also say there are about two million drug users in Iran.
