NATO Secretary General meets Jordanian leaders

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen conferred Sunday with Jordan's King Abdullah II about re-launching peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, according to a royal court statement, dpa reported.

The discussions tackled "latest Middle East developments and efforts under way to surmount obstacles facing the peace process and resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two- state vision," the statement said.

Rasmussen also met Prime Minister Samir Rifai and General Mishaal al-Zaben, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to discuss increasing military ties between Jordan and NATO.

Rasmussen is visiting Jordan for the first time in the course of the Euro-Med dialogue with NATO that was launched 1994 with the aim of boosting stability and peace in the region, the statement said.

The Euro-Med dialogue involves six non-NATO Arab members - Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Mauritania - as well as Israel.
