The Arab League was to discuss recognizing the Libyan National Council as a representative of the Libyan people at its meeting on Saturday, according to diplomatic sources.

Several Arab countries have been in contact with the Council, which aims to give a political face to the revolution, sources at the League told the German Press Agency dpa.

The European Union on Friday announced it would cut off all ties with Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi and would instead deal with the council, which was formed in the eastern, rebel-held city of Benghazi.

The Arab League is also expected to discuss the option of a no-fly zone over Libya
