The United States has condemned the Syrian government's use of force against protesters in a crackdown that has left at least 17 people dead in the restive city of Daraa, dpa reported.

"The United States is alarmed by the violence overnight in Deraa by security forces against civilians," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Wednesday.

"We're deeply concerned by the Syrian government's use of violence, intimidation and arbitrary arrests to hinder the ability of its people to freely exercise their universal rights."

Security forces of President Bashar al-Assads' regime have been cracking down on protests in several cities, and sent in troops to quell demonstrations in Deraa. Residents have called the act a massacre.
