A Syrian worker was shot and wounded Sunday while taking part in a protest to support the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in the Christian area of the Lebanese capital, dpa reported.

According to Lebanese police a passenger in a passing car shot at the Syrian protesters while they were demonstrating in the Christian area of Nabaa, in east Beirut.

The demonstrator was shot in the stomach and was taken to a local hospital, the police said.

Syrian workers held several demonstrations Sunday in favor of the regime.

Some 150 protesters demonstrated earlier in front of the Syrian embassy amid heavy security.

Other protests were organized in the west Beirut Sunni neighborhood of Tarek Jadidah, a stronghold of followers of the late premier Rafik Hariri. Some residents were reported to have thrown stones and tomatoes at the protesters, forcing the Lebanese army to intervene before the situation got out of hand.

Hariri's followers hold Syria responsible for the killing of the late premier, a charge Damascus has consistently denied.

Most Sunni Muslims and a number of the Christian community in Lebanon oppose the politics of the Syrian regime in Lebanon, while the Hezbollah-led opposition back Damascus leaders, as they are their main allies along with Iran.

As many as 300,000 Syrians work mostly on construction sites in Lebanon.

Syria has been engulfed in protests since March 15 calling for reforms and more freedom in the country. More than 35 people have been killed across Syria in violence in violence related to the portests.
