State media: Arab League summit "postponed indefinitely"

The Annual Arab Summit scheduled to take place in Baghdad on May 11 has been postponed indefinitely, Egyptian state media reported Wednesday.

The meeting's new date will be determined at a meeting of Arab League foreign ministers in Cairo on May 15, media reported, quoting Deputy Secretary-General of the League Ahmed Ben Helli.

The League's Gulf members reportedly lobbied to cancel the summit after the Iraqi government condemned the deployment of Gulf troops to quell unrest in Bahrain in March, dpa reported.

The May 15 ministerial meeting will also determine who will replace outgoing Secretary-General Amr Moussa, Ben Helli said.

Egypt, where the League is headquartered, and the Gulf state of Qatar have both submitted nominees for the post.
