Palestinian activists have formed a public committee to monitor the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip, Xinhua reported.

The committee, UNRWA Watch, "will make sure that the UNRWA carries out its tasks in a way securing the rights of Palestinian refugees," said Hossam Adwan, the head of the committee.

According to Adwan, the UNRWA Watch formed last week comprised seven members. It will monitor the UN agency's performance in education, health, housing and aid.

The committee was formed after the UNRWA suspended some of its services in Gaza due to a financial crisis, which the international agency claimed was due to lack of sufficient funding.

However, Adanan Abu Hassna, spokesman for the UNRWA, said that the so-called UNRWA Watch has not contacted the agency. "We do not know anything about it."

The UNRWA provides services to nearly 900,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, home for 1.6 million people.
