The Syrian opposition Tuesday called for a "day of anger" against Russia for backing President Bashar al-Assad, who has been clamping down with deadly force on pro-democracy protests for six months, DPA reported.

In a post on the social networking website Facebook, the activists called on "all the free people of Syria" to "take to the streets and protest against Russia" for "supporting the killers."

Russia has supported al-Assad's regime by blocking attempts at the United Nations to impose sanctions against Damascus.

Around 2,600 people have been killed in the crackdown so far, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Monday

Security forces shot dead at least 19 people in Hama and surrounding areas on Monday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Tuesday.

Also Monday, more than 60 people were arrested during house-to-house raids in Hama and Idlib provinces, the London-based group said.
