Twelve Iranians who were kidnapped by Syrian rebels during the course of 2011 have been released, Press TV reported.

The 12 include seven Iranian pilgrims kidnapped in November and five engineers taken in August, according to the report. There was no immediate Syrian comment.

According to the Syrian authorities, a total of 23 Iranians have been seized since an anti-government uprising erupted in Syria in March 2011.

Iranian pilgrims frequently visit Shiite Muslim shrines in Syria.

The Syrian opposition has accused Iran of supporting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad as it cracks down on an ongoing uprising.
