UN: "Terrorist groups" involved in attacks in Syria

"Terrorist groups" have taken advantage of the conflict situation in Syria and have carried out attacks there, a United Nations spokesman said Friday, dpa reported.

"Do we have hard, conclusive evidence (on al-Qaeda) at this point? No, we don't," said Martin Nesirky when asked whether the UN had evidence that the terrorist group al-Qaeda was responsible for attacks in Syria, particularly the recent twin bombings that killed 55 people in Damascus.

"There is a genuine concern shared by the UN secretary general, General Roberd Mood and the Joint Special Envoy (Kofi Annan) that terrorist groups have taken advantage of the continued violence and insecurity in Syria," Nesirky said.

Ban on Thursday named al-Qaeda, saying, "a few days ago there was a huge, serious, massive terrorist attack. I believe that there must be al-Qaeda behind it. This has created again very serious problems."
