The opposition Syrian National Council on Saturday urged the United Nations to convene an emergency meeting to discuss an alleged massacre committed by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Homs, DPA reported.

More than 100 people, mainly children, were killed when troops shelled the town of Houla in the restive central province on Friday, the opposition said.

"The meeting should determine the UN responsibility in the face of such mass killings and forced expulsions from (anti-government) areas," the council said in a statement.

The head of the London-based opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, said the killings had prompted a mass exodus of people from Houla.
