Six other militants were killed alongside Said Ali al-Shihri, al-Qaeda's second in command in the Arabian Peninsula, reported dpa.
"Al-Shihri's death is a painful blow for the remaining terrorist elements," a senior official was quoted as saying on the defence ministry website.
