Egypt's Morsi boasts achievements during first 100 days in office

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi observed his first 100 days in office Saturday with a declaration that he has restored 70 per cent of the country's security since taking office, DPA reported.

Morsi, Egypt's first civilian and Islamist president, recounted his accomplishments in a speech two days before the 100-day-period formally ends.

Security has been a major concern since the ouster of former president Hosny Mubarak last year, with crime soaring despite government promises to plug a nationwide security vacuum.

During a celebration for the 39th anniversary of the 1973 war with Israel, Morsi gave an overview of what he has accomplished so far.

"We achieved 70 per cent of our objective in the first 100 days," Morsi told the crowd gathered in the Cairo stadium. "I am not saying this is enough, but this is what happened and we are going to complete it."

Before his election, Morsi vowed to achieve 64 objectives during his first 100 days, including tackling problems with bread shortages, traffic, security, fuel shortages, and cleanliness.

Morsi said that 40 per cent of the cleanliness objective was achieved, while production of bread increased to reach 80 per cent of Egyptians.

"We are committed together to continue these achievements," said Morsi.

However, an activist group which has been monitoring Morsi's accomplishments noted there was a big difference between his claims and the statistics they have collected.

According to the Morsi Meter website, an initiative by a group of tech-savvy activists, only four of Morsi's 64 promises had been carried out by Saturday evening.

Morsi also praised the role of the Egyptian armed forces in the Six-Day War, as well as during the January 25 revolution in 2011.
