Germany doubles help for Syrian refugees to 55 million euros

Germany announced Friday that it was doubling to 55 million euros (72 million dollars) its financial help for Syrian refugees, reported dpa.

Development Minister Dirk Niebel said the largest share of the funds - 25 million euros - had been earmarked for the United Nations' Children Fund (UNICEF).

The rest of the money is to be used to health improve health and hygiene services for the refugees as well as vaccination campaigns.

The move means that Germany is now one of the largest donor nations to helping the refugees from the conflict in Syria.

According to the UN about 340,000 Syrians are registered as refugees.
