The Algerian army has carried out a final assault on Islamist hostage-takers at a remote gas complex, killing 11 of them, reported Algeria's state news agency APS. Seven hostages were executed by their captors, dpa reported.
Three Belgians, two Americans, a Briton and a Japanese hostage were executed at a gas facility in south-eastern Algeria, the El Watan newspaper reported Saturday.
The Islamist insurgents had started executing the hostages early Saturday, before the Algerian military stormed the facility.
Chaine 3 radio reported that the militants had late Friday tried to set part of the plant on fire, but were stopped by the army and plant workers.
The military was expected to hold a press conference.
The German Foreign Ministry confirmed there were no German hostages.
