Kerry: Syria death toll may be 90,000

US Secretary of State John Kerry said Thursday that the death toll in Syria could have reached 90,000 during two years of conflict, dpa reports.

Speaking before a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Kerry said he had received the figure in a conversation with the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia.

"The first thing he mentioned to me was, in his estimate, perhaps as many as 90,000 people who have been killed in Syria," Kerry said.

In recent weeks, the United Nations increased its estimated death toll to 70,000.
