The League of Arab States has great potential and can play an important role in resolving the Syrian crisis, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said.
"The League plays a very important role in the Syrian settlement, and it is essentially one of the important players in this process. Much depends on its position," RIA Novosti him as saying at a news conference on Tuesday.
"I believe that the League has a great potential, and it really can play an important constructive role in seeking of a political settlement," Gatilov said.
He said this approach is in the basis of Russia's dialogue with the Arab League: Russia believes that the organization, along with other key players can make an important contribution to the search for solutions to the Syrian conflict.
Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for more than a year and half. According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 60,000 with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
