Yemeni President Abdo Rabbu Mansour Hadi is to visit US President Barack Obama next week to discuss the transfer of Yemeni detainees at Guantanamo Bay back to Yemen, dpa reported.

The White House said the August 1 visit is to "underscore" US support for Yemen's political transition.

"The president looks forward to discussing with President Hadi US efforts to enhance democratic governance and support economic development in Yemen, further strengthen our counterterrorism partnership and enable the return of Yemeni detainees at Guantanamo Bay who have been designated for transfer," the White House said.

The US military is preparing to hold hearings for 71 detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to determine whether they should be released, the Pentagon said earlier this week.

Twenty-six of 46 captives held as "indefinite detainees" are from Yemen. Indefinite detainees are considered too dangerous to release, but there also is not enough evidence to justify a criminal trial.
