Eight Tunisian troops have been killed and four injured in fighting with Islamist radicals near the border with Algeria, state television announced Monday evening, dpa reported.
The troops were caught in an ambush in the western Mount Chaambi area, where soldiers have been hunting an Islamist cell for months, the report said.
President Moncef Marzouki was to address the nation later Monday. Regular programming on state television was suspended and replaced with prayers and patriotic hymns.
