A US intelligence assessment released to the public Friday said 1,429 people, including 426 children, were killed in a chemical weapons attack by the Syrian regime last week, dpa reported
The report pointed to "a large body of independent sources" that show the Assad regime conducted a chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs on August 21.
It notes the Syrian opposition could not have carried out the attack and that the government was the only source that could have done so. It points to government frustration with inability to clear neighbourhoods of the opposition that likely contributed to the attack.
"We have a body of information, including past Syrian practice, that leads us to conclude that regime officials were witting of and directed the attack on August 21," it said.
