The UN Human Rights Council has approved a resolution condemning chemical weapons attacks in Syria, without however assigning blame to any party in the conflict, dpa reported.

At a meeting in Geneva on Friday, the council also sharply criticized Syrian authorities for "gross, systematic and widespread violation of human rights," and blasted the rebels for rights abuses as well.

The council said it "strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian Arab Republic, which is prohibited under international law, amounts to a serious crime and has a devastating impact on civilians."

The resolution was supported by 40 of the council's 47 member states. Venezuela opposed it, while India and Kazakhstan were among the six countries that abstained.
