OPCW debates Syrian chemical weapons destruction plan

The international chemical weapons agency was meeting in The Hague on Friday to discuss a Syrian government plan for destroying the country's chemical weapons, dpa reported.

The proposal being considered by the executive body of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) foresees that most of the arsenal, including mustard gas and sarin, will be shipped out of Syria. Albania is one of the countries being considered as a possible destination.

Since early October, when the United Nations and the OPCW started their chemical disarmament operation in the war-torn country, 22 out of a total of 23 chemical weapons sites declared by Syria have been verified.

All facilities for producing such arms and for filling chemicals into munitions have been destroyed, according to the OPCW.

The UN Security Council has mandated that Syria must be free of chemical weapons by the middle of next year.
