The UN Security Council was set to discuss a warning that international inspectors in Syria were facing increasing threats as they prepare to begin the dangerous task of transporting chemical weapons for their destruction outside that country, dpa reported.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon voiced grave concern in a letter to the council that the inspectors are exposed to dangers as they prepare to move a large quantity of chemical through war zones.

The chemical weapons reportedly will be shipped to US vessels for their destruction.

Sigrid Kaag, who heads the joint team of more than 60 inspectors in Syria, was scheduled to brief the council behind closed doors of the threats against the inspectors.
