Four prominent human rights activists were abducted Tuesday from their office in a rebel-held town outside Damascus, an Syrian opposition group said, dpa reported.

The Local Coordination Committees, an activist network, said that Razan Zeitouneh, Samira al-Khalil, Wael Hamadeh and Nazim al-Hamadi were seized by men who raided the office of the Violations Documentation Centre in Douma, in the Eastern Ghouta area.

Al-Khalil's husband Yassin Al Haj Saleh, who is a prominent opposition activist, confirmed the news on his personal Facebook page, describing it as "an offence against the revolution and against Syria."

Zeitouneh and the Violations Documentation Centre played a prominent role in disseminating information about the August chemical weapons attack in Eastern Ghouta.
