The United States continues to support the moderate opposition in Syria and the commander of the Free Syrian Army, Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday, dpa reported.
Hagel described the situation in Syria as complex and noted the US was still evaluating reports of advances by opposition extremists that prompted a suspension of non-lethal assistance to the opposition in northern Syria. He stressed however that Washington would continue to provide humanitarian aid.
"When the moderate opposition is set back, that's not good, but that's what we deal with," Hagel said. "So we have to deal with it. We will deal with it. And it is difficult. But we take it straight up, work with the moderate opposition, with our allies in the area, and we'll continue to do that."
