Five ministers from a Muslim Brotherhood-backed party resigned Tuesday from embattled Libyan premier Ali Zeidan's government, dpa reported.

The Justice and Construction Party's five ministers were resigning in protest at the government's failure to "fulfil its promises," party leader Mohammed Sawan told the local Solidarity Press news agency.

The move by the country's second-largest party comes after attempts to withdraw confidence from Zeidan in the General National Congress - Libya's parliament - failed.

Zeidan's administration, formed in November 2012, has struggled to impose order over a country dominated by the numerous revolutionary militias that overthrew long-term leader Moamer Gaddafi in 2011.

Most recently, deadly clashes between rival ethnic groups have taken place in the country's far south, while in eastern Libya federalists have blockaded key oil facilities since July.
