Syrian FM: Geneva II results to be put up for referendum in Syria

The results of the international peace conference Geneva II will be put up for a referendum in Syria, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said, opening the international peace conference in the Swiss city on Wednesday, Itar-Tass reported.

"Only Syrian citizens are entitled to determine future of their homeland," he noted.

"No one in the world can legitimize or revoke the Syrian president or the country's government except for people of this country," Muallem told U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. "No one in the world has this right, this right belongs only to Syrian people," the minister noted.

"We should give joint rebuff to terrorism and should fight for peaceful future in Syria. The dialogue between the Syrians should take place on Syrian soil," the foreign minister said.

"Syrian people seek for freedom, democracy, establishment of peace and strong institutions of state power," Muallem stated. "We seek to have a strong united army. We do not need any mercenaries, we do not want people to be kidnapped and blackmailed," he added. "Armies of mercenaries are involved in human organ trafficking, rape women and recruit young people.

They are hiding behind long, incomprehensible names. They are time-servers and defectors. They stage terrorist acts, though they claim that they are fighting terrorism. They have many names, but we know all of them. This is the truth," he noted. "The West notes that they are fighting terrorism, but they support terrorists secretly," Muallem said.

But "there is some light at the end of the tunnel," the minister said with confidence. He noted that "Syrian army protects the state, Syria retains its integrity." "Allied states supported us," he recalled.

The Syrian foreign minister thanked Russian government on behalf of Syrian people. "Russia showed itself as a true friend and supported the principles of sovereignty laid down in the U.N. Charter," he said. "China, the BRICS states (the grouping bringing together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - Itar-Tass), several countries in Africa, Latin America, Iran and Iraq supported us," he said.
