Russia hopes for success of a second round of Syria peace talks in Geneva, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after talks with his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra on Tuesday, Itar-Tass reported.

"We welcome the start of the Geneva II conference, yesterday a second round began," he said.

"We hope that it will be useful and the sides will be able to move towards accord that should be mutual.

"Our approaches are also based on the need to move towards a joint search of responses to challenges and threats," he added. "We support the right of people to make decisions independently, without external interference."

Lavrov said these decisions should be based on the Geneva communique and UN Security Council Resolution 1281 that "contains a call to ensure creditability of Syrian delegations for them to reflect the whole spectrum of the Syrian society.
