A truck packed with explosives has been detonated in a Kurdish village in northern Iraq killing at least 17 people, Iraqi police say.

About another dozen people, including women and children have been injured, and a number of houses destroyed, BBC reported.

A second truck bomber was shot dead at the edge of the village by the local Kurdish Peshmerga militia before he could set off an explosion.

A similar attack in another village in the region last month left 28 dead.

The latest blast went off around midnight (2100GMT Wednesday) in the village of Wardak, 30 km (20 miles) east of Mosul and 390km (240 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad.
