22 killed in suicide attack in central Iraq

At least 22 people were killed and 50 injured when a suicide bomber attacked a funeral in Baquba, central Iraq, dpa reported quoting local media as said on Monday.

Iraq's Alsumaria news website quoted local police sources as saying that the attack took place on Monday evening at the funeral of a tribal sheikh in a village near Baquba, 50 kilometres north-east of the capital Baghdad.

Hospital sources in Baquba told Arab media that there are 22 bodies inside the morgue.

Sami al-Massudi, a Shiite official who oversees the well-being of Shiite religious sites in Iraq, said late Monday that a roadside bomb hit his convoy in Saidiyah area of south Baghdad, wounding three of his bodyguards

The attack comes after five people were killed overnight on Monday in two car bombs in Ramadi, 120 kilometres west of Baghdad.

Explosions in Iraq last week claimed the lives of some 100 people, many of them Shiite pilgrims commemorating the martyrdom of an eighth-century imam at a shrine in northern Baghdad.
