Suicide bomber kills Iraqi Sunni lawmaker

A suicide bomber killed an Iraqi Sunni lawmaker on Tuesday in the western city of Falluja, security sources said, dpa reported.

The bomber was wearing an explosives belt and blew himself up along with Ifan Saadoun al-Issawi in the restive city.

Falluja is one of the main cities of Anbar province, the heartland of Iraq's Sunni minority. The provincial council announced a three-day mourning period for al-Issawi.

Anbar has been the centre of demonstrations against the Shiite-dominated government in recent weeks. Protesters demand amendments to laws relating to anti-terrorism and banning members of the former ruling Baath party from public office.

Protesters also demand the release of tens of thousands of other Sunni prisoners held in anti-terrorism sweeps.

The government on Monday released more than 300 prisoners held under anti-terrorism laws in a bid to appease demonstrators.
