Three killed in Iraq attacks

A total of three people were killed Saturday in separate attacks in northern Iraq, the latest in a week of deadly bombings in the troubled country, dpa reported.

Two policemen were shot dead by unknown gunmen in the area of Shura in Mosul, reported the Iraqi independent website Alsumaria News, quoting security officials.

A third person - a civilian - was killed when a bomb hit his car in the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

Kirkuk has been at the centre of a dispute between the semi-autonomous Kurdish region inside Iraq and the central government in Baghdad.

On Wednesday, Kirkuk was one of several Iraqi areas to have been targeted by a string of car bombings that left at least 26 people dead.

Twelve others died in attacks in other areas on Thursday.

The surge in violence comes amid a festering crisis pitting Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and the country's formerly dominant Sunni minority.

Iraq's Sunnis have been holding massive demonstrations against al-Maliki, accusing him of marginalizing their politicians.

The country has witnessed near-daily attacks since US troops withdrew in December 2011, raising fears of a return to the sectarian tensions that drove the country close to civil war in 2006 and 2007.
