Iraq parliament speaker survives assassination bid

Iraqi parliamentary speaker Osama al-Nujaifi on Wednesday survived unhurt a roadside bomb attack in the northern city of Mosul, said police, dpa reported.

The attack on the convoy of al-Nujaifi, a Sunni Muslim, left two bodyguards dead, and nine other persons wounded.

Mosul, around 400 kilometres north of the capital Baghdad, is among Iraq's most ethnically diverse and dangerous cities.

Iraq has seen a sharp rise in attacks in recent months, raising fears of a return to the sectarian violence that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

According to UN estimates, 979 people were killed in Iraq in September, making it one of the deadliest months in the country in the past five years.
