The number of deaths killed in a car bomb blast in a market in the predominantly Shiite north Baghdad area of Sadr City district late Tuesday rose to 12, according to security and medical sources.

The blast, which also left some 30 others wounded, came amid a week-long militant offensive in which insurgents have seized vast part of territories in northern Iraq.

For the moment, no one claimed responsibility for the bombing, but attacks against Shiite districts are always done by Sunni militants.

On Sunday, at least nine people were killed and 21 wounded in a bomb blast at a marketplace in downtown Baghdad, capital of Iraq

The attack occurred around noon when a roadside bomb went off at a crowded popular market in Bab al-Sharji area. The huge blast destroyed several shops and many stalls, while some nearby civilian vehicles were also damaged.

Iraq is witnessing some of its worst violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, a total of about 9,000 Iraqis were killed in 2013, the highest annual death toll in years.
