5 arrested in new protest of Israeli tennis player in New Zealand

Five people were arrested Thursday as anti-Israel protestors harassed Israeli player Shahar Peer at the ASB Tennis Classic tournament in Auckland, news reports said.

About 20 members of the local Global Peace and Justice group who object to Israel's treatment of Palestinians refused police requests to stop using megaphones to protest Peer's participation, DPA reported.

A member of the group was also arrested Wednesday in a similar protest that temporarily stopped Peer's match.

Spokesman John Minto, who was one of those arrested Thursday, told the New Zealand Herald earlier that the group favours boycotts of Israel, including sporting contacts.

Despite Thursday's protest, Peer continued her unbeaten form at the tournament, beating Russia's Maria Kirilenko 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 in a quarter-final match.
