Israel has agreed in principle to pay the United Nations 11 million dollars for damage inflicted to UN premises in the Gaza Strip during last year's Israel-Hamas conflict, a UN spokesman said Thursday.
"An agreement has been reached in principle on the terms of an arrangement under which Israel would make a payment to the UN," said Martin Nesirky.
The UN is waiting for a "green light" from the Israeli government, which should be imminent, Nesirky said, adding that an agreement would be finalized only after this, dpa reported.
The UN said the Israeli Defence Forces caused extensive property damage to its numerous facilities, including schools for Palestinians, in Gaza during the December-January fighting. It estimated, through an investigation, that the damage amounted to 11 million dollars.
