The UN's cultural and educational organization UNESCO criticized Israel Friday on its decision to include ancient shrines in the occupied West Bank in a list of "national heritage sites."
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said the shrines - the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron and Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem - are "of historical and religious significance not only to Judaism but also to Islam, and to Christianity as well."
She also expressed concern at the escalation of tension in the region the decision has provoked, DPA reported.
Israeli President Shimon Peres said Wednesday that the holy sites would be refurbished, but their status would not be altered.
