Israel calls presence of world leaders in Tehran a "disgrace"

The decision by representatives from more than 120 countries to attend a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran is a "disgrace and a stain on humanity," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu charged Wednesday, DPA reported.

"Seventy years ago, 6 million members of our people were murdered in an action of genocide. The world promised then 'Never Again'," he told reporters before meeting David McAllister, the prime minister of the German state of Niedersachsen.

"Today, more than 120 states are in Tehran, where the regime denies the Holocaust and calls for the destruction of the Jewish state. This regime oppresses its citizens, collaborates with the massacre of innocent Syrians and shouts death to America, death to Israel.

"It seems that many in the international community learned nothing. I think this is a disgrace and a stain on humanity," said Netanyahu, according to a text provided by his office.

He thanked Germany for being "one of the states which refuses to participate in this show."

Israel had earlier expressed disappointed that United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, as well as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, were among those attending the summit.

With some 120 members, mainly in Africa, South America and Asia, the NAM was formed during the Cold War as a bloc which formally sided neither with the United States nor with the Soviet Union, although in reality many regarded it as anti-West.
