Israel parliament votes to dissolve, heads to new elections

Israeli lawmakers voted unanimously early Tuesday to dissolve parliament and head to new elections to be held early next year, dpa reported.

Some 100 lawmakers voted in favour of the third and final reading of the dissolution bill, with none opposed and none abstaining. Earlier, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had asked the house to approve January 22 for the next elections.

He called new elections last week, citing failure to pass the state budget. Israel's next elections had been due to be held in October 2013.
