Israeli airstrike on Gaza Strip, no injuries reported

Israeli F-16 fighter jets carried out four successive airstrikes on the northern, central and southern Gaza Strip before dawn Sunday in response to earlier rocket attacks by militants in the enclave, dpa reported.

Witnesses said the Israeli planes hovered over the coastal enclave ruled by the Islamic Hamas movement before the airstrikes, which all hit cultivated fields and caused no reported damages or injuries.

Missiles hit near the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahia, as well as south of Gaza City, in the central town of Deir el-Ballah and east of the southern city of Khan Younis.

The airstrikes were an immediate Israeli response to homemade rockets attacks carried out by unknown militants from the coastal enclave into southern Israel. No injuries were reported in those attacks.

On Friday, an Israeli soldier and two militants were killed after a militant breached the border between Gaza Strip and Israel, as part of what Israel said was a plan to kidnap Israeli soldiers and exchange them for Palestinian prisoners.
