The ruling Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip would attempt a fresh Egyptian-brokered ceasefire, the group's spokesman, Ayman Taha, said late Saturday.
Israeli officials said they had no confirmation of a ceasefire agreement. Shortly after the Hamas announcement, the Israeli military said rockets were fired on its territory, dpa reported.
Hamas had already declared a ceasefire earlier in the week, but it did not hold amid ongoing rockets fired by militants into Israel. At least 16 Palestinians have been killed and 70 injured, and five Israelis have been injured in the latest wave of violence since Monday.
