Popular Turkish singer Ibrahim Tatlises, who was shot in an assassination attempt earlier this month, was released from intensive care on Monday, Turkish media reported.

Earlier on Friday Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited the singer in the hospital. During his 20-minute visit at Maslak Acıbadem Hospital in İstanbul, Erdoğan also accepted Tatlıses' application to run as a deputy candidate for the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in the upcoming June 12 general elections. The renowned singer will run as a candidate from his hometown of Şanlıurfa.

Tatlises, born in the mainly Kurdish southeast of Turkey, was shot in the head as he left studios in Istanbul on March 13. The singer owns a restaurant chain and a television production company.
