Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged the strengthening of international pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, TRT Haber TV channel said today.

Erdogan said that there is no democracy in Syria. The regime that kills its own people is dictatorial. He stressed that the events in Syria were not inspired by outside forces.
Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for over 17 months.

According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is nearing 20,000. More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
