Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and the League of Arab States on the Syrian crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi arrived in the Turkish city of Hatay, where Syrian refugees are accommodated, Anadolu agency reported on Tuesday.
According to the agency, Brahimi will get acquainted with living conditions of Syrian refugees.
There are more than 79,000 of Syrian refugees in Turkey, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) said. A total of 10 tented camps for Syrian refugees have been operating in the Turkish cities of Hatay, Shanlıurfa, Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras.
Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.
According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is nearing 20,000. More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
