Turkey needs more help for Syria refugees, ambassador says

Turkey needs more international aid to help it cope with the flow of refugees from Syria, its ambassador said Wednesday, DPA reported.

"The international community's help has not been enough. We know that everybody is being taxed ... but we believe the international community can do more," Selim Yenel told the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee in Brussels.

There are currently 80,000 Syrian refugees in Turkey, down from a high point of about 120,000, he said. But he also noted that the country is bracing "for at least another 40,000" and is constructing four more refugee camps on top of the eight it has.

Turkey has spent 200 million dollars so far, Yenel said.

"We have been able to manage it ourselves, but of course we need to prepare for the worst," he said. "There could be floods of people coming."
